Once more into the breach! Must definitely get my friend's camera this time.

xtemujin - July 5, 2009 12:15 PM (GMT)
I think that the Navy open house will also be this year as that was the case in 2007.

blowpipe - July 5, 2009 12:48 PM (GMT)
PLC really change alot. I visited there during my last ICT for SMT & shocked that it became really modern comparble to Tekong BMTC.

I remeber the good old days in 1997/98 when we still sleep in long house bunk during our course in SWI. You can hear the rain drops on the zinc roof. My NS mates always visit the army open house as a group but I did not join coz too far. Anyway, I will make it a point to go this year... :P

same thoughts here...unless we do en-mass activties like shooting range or compete in the SOC or such other things...already i expect huge crowds for certain activities...like the last few AoHs...

xtemujin - July 6, 2009 02:52 AM (GMT)
The queue for firing the SAR21 during the 2007 army open house was very long.

xtemujin - July 14, 2009 06:28 AM (GMT)
84mm is old school, now is MATADOR or mini MATADOR FTW. :ph43r:

FIVE-TWO - July 14, 2009 06:29 AM (GMT)

xtemujin - July 14, 2009 06:31 AM (GMT)

I never even see armbrust before, although we were trained on it during reservist, but never fired live.

xtemujin - July 14, 2009 06:47 AM (GMT)
I see, I don't know how the infantry guys are carrying the Matador as it's quite heavy and long like the 84.

FIVE-TWO - July 14, 2009 07:00 AM (GMT)
it looks much thicker than the 84.

blowpipe - July 14, 2009 08:01 AM (GMT)
My unit went for Matador conversion course last year..SAF serve 1 day ICT callup..report in SBO only.

If I am not wrong, Matator is to replace Armburst ..not 84.

Overall it is bulky than Armburst but certainly much more accurate.

xtemujin - July 14, 2009 08:29 AM (GMT)
I'll have to ask the guys how they carry and walk with the Matador during AOH 2009.

I'm sorry - don't understand your post. What do you mean by it is more accurate? Do you mean the sight is better?

dacis2 - July 14, 2009 10:52 AM (GMT)
? They're still using 84s as the heavy anti-tank weapon in my old unit at least. Matador is for the LAW gunners.

i remember my sispec days armburst LF....one guy hit the target right at the bulls eye...completely destroy the target from 250m ircc.....that lucky bastard got a long weekend....

dacis2 - July 14, 2009 01:29 PM (GMT)
My friend was telling me about his Armbrust LF. One of his platoon mates hit the target square on. The rocket bounced off, landed and detonated. Needless to say, everyone was rather surprised.

xtemujin - July 14, 2009 01:50 PM (GMT)
See the box date.

bdique - July 14, 2009 04:39 PM (GMT)
part of the perks of being a BX gunner in an AI estab is that when dismounted you get the Matador/Armbrust...

used both b4...armbust lighter, but bloody uncomfortable...Matador may be heavier but the sling makes it soooo much more comfy...a fair trade off i feel ;)

84 still used by the HQ platoon of each coy...

whee! i wanna go AOH09! praying no classes clashing during that time :D

am I right to say the 84 still gives the most impressive flash and back blast?

apples with apples lah.

LAW is for sect/plt level
84 is your coy direct fire and AT asset

If your Bn has an ATGM platoon, that'd be your heavy AT

kotay - July 15, 2009 02:05 AM (GMT)
... actually, come to think of it ...

The MATADOR is 90mm
The 84RR is, well, 84mm

Going by the cone diameter being a factor in HEAT warhead penetration and also that the MATADOR may have the benefit of a newer cone design ... the MATADOR may in fact be a heavier hitter than the 84RR in the AT role, just less accurate.

FIVE-TWO - July 15, 2009 02:06 AM (GMT)
and why is the matador less accurate? because never bore sight?

My pov ... significantly less operator training time for the LAW gunners as opposed to the 84 gunners.

blowpipe - July 15, 2009 04:51 AM (GMT)
I never went for the Matador conversion course myself. When we fired Armburst during AIT, most of us missed the targets.

But my NS mates who went share with us that they hit their targets. For a bunch of NS men like us, I think that is supposed to he good results...

Again I think it is up to the indivudal how we used the weapon. E.g most of us feel that SAR21 is more accurate than M16. But there are also another pool of people who feel that M16 is better when engaging at long range like 300m.

Certainly brings back old memories handling that tube. That's certainly one brave assistant gunner. As assistant gunners, most of us quickly took cover behind the concrete wall as soon as the command to fire was given. Even then, we still got much of the shockwave. It felt like you just got punched in the face by a heavyweight boxer.

CM06 - July 15, 2009 12:43 PM (GMT)
I managed to fire the LAW back in sispec. i swear i missed the board by an inch.. it flew right over the board for a spectacular blast on the ground behind.

I also managed to fire the 84RR live round. They made us stand next to the gunner when we play loader boy that hurt like hell...

All the training rounds were causing IAs like crap so the commander made us all fire live rounds.

Even so, the delay (due to IAs) permitted only half the cohort to actually fire. By the time we got back to camp it was definitely at midnight(considering we started right after lunch that was really cck-up)
