SEOUL - Two South Korean fighter jets apparently crashed into a mountain Tuesday during a routine training flight near their east coast base, military officials said.
The F-5s with a total of three pilots aboard went missing five minutes after leaving base at Gangneung 160 kilometres east of Seoul, the defence ministry said.
"We believe the jets have crashed into a mountain west of the base," an air force spokesman told AFP, adding the fate of the pilots was not known.
The ministry said it would disclose details after a rescue team found the wreckage.
The apparent crash would be the second such case in less than two years after two F-5Es crashed northeast of Seoul in November 2008.
The age of the South Korean jets was not known. The F-5 first went into service in the United States in the 1960s.
