Title: Chinese Military Shovel
Description: Could this replace our ET stick & blade?

Nice vid.. It's the dream personal tool with many functions but safety of the user will be a primary concern.. :P

--> Chinese Military Shovel WJQ-308 (HQ + Full length) (youtube)

Another Link of the video.. (tudou.com)

How about replacing the individually issued ET stick, blade with this?? Not to mention, the SLIGHTLY reduced no. of store items / tools that Platoon Sergeants need to account for before & after outfield training / mission.. :D

Interesting concept.

It could do with an optional longer handle for outfield digging. Personally, I would say take away the shovel(blade) and leave the others as a multi function hand tool instead (it can also be smaller since it doesnt have to support shovelling..

Also not sure how this will stand up to mud and rust. The video's mainly drier soil and sandstone.

I like the part where they dig holes to go up a verticle surface though.

Man...a very practical tool !

Mostly standard for a shovel entrenching tool with some added stuff i like and fine useful like the wire cutters.
Personally wont use it to open cans nor cut my food up unless really desperate haha.
Having a serrated edge on one side, i do not approve either.
Overall quite alright, way better then the crap we got lol.
I don't understand why we don't get a foldable shovel.

After all these years, and with all the high-tech stuff the SAF has, how is it we still use the old ET stick and blade? Has it changed yet?

don't think so as the ET stick\blade are here to stay just like my SB22 and D10 cables

:P

But you do wonder, some of the stuff on the chinese shovel seems like common sense if you think hard about it and why it has never made it to the SAF? Perhaps not all the features but some of it would easily have a place. Frankly, it is little thing that count.

Maybe an overdue WITS project is coming soon or not so soon.. :P

the hinge looks too slim, even made of metal I doubt it will survive a lot of use especially when you really use it for months in real field conditions (when actually deployed to combat). just look at all the metal things that the combat engineers manage to break with our hands. changkol sticks - break, iron pickets - bent and twisted, earth auger - broken, monkey ram - broken handles, etc etc etc.

This is the weapon that will save the world! Imagine if they use this tool if their military decides to help build agricultural projects to their poor areas....

Seriously, the bladed sides of the shovel should be covered when not in use, or it might be a disaster for the inattentive soldier....

I don't understand why we don't get a foldable shovel.

Foldable shovels are available as far as I know, just not all units.

As mentioned by others, the bladed bit leaves me a bit wary. I find the wirecutters/nail puller potentially quite useful. The grapple, anchor and shield are trying too hard.

I'm wondering the same thing as 5-2 about the hinge. The foldable shovels I've seen aren't particularly flimsy, but the hinges are used to hell and back.

i think i saw this is failblog. i totally couldn't treat this seriously after watching them cut vege and using it as a shield. the joint truly doesn't look sturdy, and leaving a sharpened/serrated edge exposed is a seriously bad idea. great idea, but at this stage its more hilarious than useful.

oh really? haha i only got the ET stick and blade. Or in certain more "hardcore" situations they gave us full length shovels haha

Yea i worry about the exposed blade too.

Also small point to note, the person cutting the vege is bloody good! very nice even slices! i can barely do that with a real knife let alone a shovel!

Our foldable shovels are the tri-fold sort. You can google it to get an idea.

^^ Thanks for the mental image @ Shotgun/Alfie. UGH.
