Insurgents seized control early Tuesday of most of the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, including the provincial government headquarters, offering a powerful demonstration of the mounting threat posed by extremists to Iraq’s teetering stability...

ISIS and ISIL are wahabis.

Individual skill is another important factor, argues Professor Bernard Loo, a defence analyst at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies. “A half-past-six weapon in the hands of a skilled operator is better than a top-notch weapon in the hands of a half-trained monkey,” he says.

With the kind of war they are fighting.
Giving their fledgling airforce Vietnam war era Prop skyraiders would be a terrific force multiplier and much cheaper and easier to maintain... or lose to attrition. Since their main opponent are pick up trucks and foot soldiers that can be serviced really well with guns and canons.
Actually even ww2 style FW190s, P47s etc would do really really nicely.

Analyst: Fall Of Baghdad Would Make Current Gas Prices ‘Look Like A Bargain’

Oil industry analysts are warning a brewing civil war between Islamic militants in Iraq could potentially send gas prices soaring here in the Southland.

KNX 1070′s Pete Demetriou reports the price of crude oil has shot up to $107 per barrel – the highest in 10 months – on reports that soldiers with the al-Qaeda-inspired Islamic State of Iraq and Syria captured two towns in an ethnically mixed province northeast of Baghdad.

The average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline in Los Angeles County dropped three-tenths of a cent Friday to $4.129, its lowest since April 7, according to figures from the AAA and Oil Price Information Service. While that price is nearly 13 cents more than one year ago, most experts are predicting a relatively tame 7 to 10 cents a gallon increase in the next two weeks as the summer season kicks off.

But any reduction in the flow of Iraqi crude due to the ongoing Islamic insurgency in the northern Iraq cities of Mosul and Tikrit could have worldwide economic consequences, according to oil industry analyst Phill Flynn, who said speculators are watching for the worst-case scenario.

“They think that Baghdad will not fall and that will be a more spirited defense of that city,” Flynn said. “But if it does fall and if the terrorists move further south, the price you’re paying at the pump today is gonna look like a bargain in a couple weeks.”

That's just being mean man. Yet, this should highlight the need for fast jets (i.e. F-16IQs) to interdict these convoys further from the capital.

Anyway there's a good number of Youtube videos of Mi-35s working in conjuction with (spotter?) Mi-17s to maul ISIS positions. Heck, there's even converted Cessna planes that are actually doing a good job snuffing out insurgents.

Yes, it is not the latest, most state-of-the art weaponry, but it will suffice. I don't think there were any decent air-to-ground assets positioned near Mosul, which could explain the fall of the city and the rapid southward advance of ISIS.

The Iraqi government's response is slow, but the pace is picking up. Barring any silly tactical errors, I'm actually thinking that this is the beginning of the end of ISIS. Their brazen actions seems to have given the impetus Baghdad needs to get serious.

Actually the videos show that since they engaged close in and in such open terrain, strafing with Canon fire will be the most cost effective way to deal with the threat. Plus they can probably have more such planes stationed in various cities and airfields for better coverage.
The fw190 type plane with 4x20mm and 2xhmg will be perfect.

Btw.. The khurdish Pm went on bbc saying he belive iraq cannot go back to the way it was. . He has in essence given up on national unity.

This is precisely the problem. Everything I read seems to suggest that the Iraqi divisions defending Nineveh (Mosul) melted away rather than fight.

The Iraqi Kurds have also made their move in the north by taking Kirkuk, so it's pretty rich of the PM to say that.

Iraqi Abrams losses revealed
http://www.janes.com/article/39550/iraqi-a...losses-revealed

The armour on five of Iraq's M1A1 Abrams tanks was penetrated by anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs) and six helicopters were shot down between 1 January and the end of May, The New York Times quoted an unnamed US official as saying on 13 June.

US steps up air strikes in Iraq http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-28715142

Obama has acted in Irbil, to prevent genocide, protect US citizens in the area but this looks more like a localised operation rather than an operation to dismantle IS as an organisation.

Kurdish 'armoured vehicle' fleet. Author is a tad bitchy, but I guess these improvised armoured vehicles are mostly to protect those inside from small arms fire and hand grenades.

They say necessity is the mother of all invention...

Once again UN n the western powers show their commitment to world peace by cheap talk.....Lame Duck n "No Action Talk Only" are truly at their best of their game...Talking the vicious militants to death.....

These cruel bunch of misfits whom many fear are simply using fear to
cause their opponents to become weak.... thereby unable to face their onslaught....
History has shown that if the opponents do the same with captured perpetrators it has a reverse effect....ISIS would think twice before committing their acts.

Not a matter of 2 wrongs doesnt make 1 right.... its about stopping these bunch of sickos the only way they understand.....not about wrongs here its about the innocent women n children n surrendered men who are being raped abused n murdered......

There are so much opposition against ISIS but yet none are resolved enough to act..... what are the Gulf states doing? What are the Arab / Muslim world leaders n champions doing? Nothing.....

If only someone round up a force of mercenaries hell bent on capturing n killing these cowardly ISIS "fighters" and showing it on TV its gonna break this bullshit streak..... break it hard... show how captured ISIS "fighters" would be treated.. a dose of their own medicine....cos they think only they are able to do it.... mentally it would screw their own minds... make recruits n volunteers think twice about joining the latest trendy jihadists.....

To be fair, US is doing something instead of "Talking the vicious militants to death....." to literally bombing them to death. There too was the Spec Ops mission in Syria, with several IS militants being sent to the next world faster than they expected.

http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-28889526

The thing is...the Western world doesn't go around publicly beheading captured IS militants on public because of a simple thing - we have the higher moral ground. There will always be idiots to test the military resolve of those who chose to show restraint. And...there's also the saying of 'violence begets violence'.

What are the Arab leaders doing? Probably not actively stemming the flow of finances to IS, that's what. It is a silly policy (to stabilise my country, it is better if my neighbours are destabilised), but I cannot foresee them taking serious action until something wildly unplanned and unexpected happens i.e. 9/11.

I dislike how being nice tends to result in being tested, but this is probably the only way forward if we want to truly be a moral fighting force. For now, I'm content with knowing that IS militants are increasingly being sent to the next world through highly kinetic methods.
